What Is EPR for Battery Waste?

EPR for battery waste places responsibility on producers and importers to collect, recycle or refurbish used batteries—automotive, lithium‑ion, industrial and portable—preventing incineration or open disposal under the Battery Waste (Management) Rules, 2022.

Application of the Rules

These rules apply regardless of battery chemistry, size or application. Producers must register for EPR on the CPCB portal, meet specified targets, and work with authorized recyclers or refurbishers, under the enforcement of CPCB and SPCBs.
