What Are Lead Acid Batteries?

Lead acid batteries are a cost‑effective energy storage solution comprising lead and lead oxide electrodes immersed in sulfuric acid. Energy is released via a reversible chemical reaction yielding lead sulphate and water. Improper handling or disposal can cause soil and groundwater contamination.

Who Grants the Import License?

Under Rule 5 of the Batteries (Management & Handling) Rules, 2001 (amended 2010), the CPCB issues licenses for new lead acid battery imports. This authority was delegated by the MoEF effective May 4, 2010.

How to Apply for a New Import License

1. Apply online via the CPCB portal.

2. Submit a hard copy on company letterhead including:

• Form I

• Form II

• Form III (quantity in MT)

• IEC Certificate (attested copy)

3. License applies to the IEC address.

4. HWMD Division In‑charge issues registration.

5. If previously registered with MoEF, surrender old certificate before CPCB application.
